20 Types of Sea Snakes – Characteristics

Sea snakes usually live in the coral reef. Most of them are not a fast mover so they prefer to hide behind the coral reef while waiting their prey come closer to them. Different with the snake in the land, mostly all sea snakes has venom, a deadly venom but some of them are shy to show up in front of human. Their habitat take place in the warm ocean water are such as Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and in the Gulf of California. 1. Horned Sea Snake

First of all, we have horned sea snake as the first sea snake on the types of sea snakes. The snake is endemic to Pacific Ocean. This snake is also known as  the spiny-headed sea snake and Peron’s sea snake. An unique fact about this snake is that horned sea snake has become the only sea snake or snake that has spine.

2. Stagger banded Sea Snake

Australia became a place that is chosen by the stagger banded sea snake as a place to live. They can be found within the depth of 100 m and they love to hide inside the coral reef. The snake feeds on blenniid fish eggs only. Their body can grow and reach its length up to 1.3 m.

3. Olive Sea Snake

Olive sea snake is also known as golden sea snake, and or olive brown sea snake. This snake is live around the coral reef and you can find many of them in The Great Barrier Reef. But, the distributin of this snake is not only in the western Pacific Ocean but also in Indian Ocean. The life span of olivia sea snake is about 15 years but some are more than that. And it also feeds on crustaceans, fish, and fish eggs.

4. Stokes Sea Snake

This snake also endemic to Indo – Pacific ocean water. Its body can grow and reach its length up to 1.5 m. Stoke sea snake is classified as a venomous snake but up to now there is no fatality from human that is known because of the stoke sea snake.

5. Spectacled Sea Snake

Also known as king’s sea snake and Hydrophide De King in France this species of sea snake can be found in the Australia. You don’t have to dive too deep to find this snake because this species of sea snake only can dive within the depth of 22 m. Their prey is fish and they can usually be found in the sandy bottom or muddy area.

6. Olive headed Sea Snake

The snake is endemic to New Guinea. Buy you can also find the snake in Australia, India, and New Caledonia. It can be found within the depth of 22 m. Olivia headed sea snake or also known as the greater sea snake can reach its body length up to 105 cm.

7. Beaked Sea Snake

Still classified as a venomous sea snake, this species of sea snake will not shy to bite humans. Its venom is really deadly and can cause death to human. About 20 species of beaked sea snake can be found in India.

On the other hand, they can be found within the depth of 100 m.  And people also known this species of sea snake with another name such as hook nosed sea snake, common sea snake, or the Valakadyn sea snake.

8. Elegant Sea Snake

Next, for the types of sea snakes is elegant sea snake. This venomous sea snake mostly can be found in Australia. It can grow and reach its length up to 2 m long. But there was once that be found and has a length of 2.6 m. Elegant sea snake can swim and live within 110 m depth beneath the sea.

9.  Yellow lipped sea snake

To find this species of sea snake you can go and look into the Indo – Pacific areas. Even though the snake is classified into sea snake but the snake will return to the land to digest and breed. Its prey are eel and small fish. It can reach its length up to 34.4 inches.

10. Yellow bellied Sea Snake

Its other name is pelagic sea snake. This species of sea snake can be found in the tropical water areas all around the world. Their body length can reach up to 35 inches with female size is bigger than male. The snake is venomous and its venom can cause some damage such as direct renal damage.

11. Viperine sea snake

Viperine sea snake can be found  throughout the Indian and Pacific Ocean. It is classified as a venomous sea snake but nowadays their number is low. They can dive within 30 m depth and their size can reach the number of 97 cm in length. If you wan to find this sea snake, you have to look for them in the muddy and soft bottom area.

12. Black banded sea krait

Black banded sea krait is also known as Chinese sea snake. This species of sea snake has a scientific name of Laticauda semifasciata. You will find this snake in the western Pacific around the coral reef. It is classified as a nocturnal and a slow mover. So the snake will hide and catch their prey because they can’t move fast.

13. Spine bellied sea snake 

Next up, we have spine bellied sea snake in the list of the types of sea snakes. Spine bellied sea snake also has another name such as Hardwicke’s sea snake and Hardwicke’s spine-bellied sea snake. The snake body can reach it length up to 8.6 m long. And they can be found in the warm water area such as Indonesia.

Shaw’s sea snake is classified as a venomous sea snake but even if so, humans still collecting this snake to benefit them. The snake is usually used as medicine and food. The snake it self also loves to live in the warm area and you can find them in the Indian and Pacific Ocean but also some other warm water areas.

Bighead sea snake is commonly known as Annandale’s sea snake. You can find this sea snake in Indonesia but you do also can find this snake in another our neighbor country such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its body color is grey just like most of the sea snakes and their body can reach its length up to 52 cm long.

Still one of the sea snake species that is classified as a venomous sea snake, this sea snake is mostly found in the India. The size of this species of sea snake usually reach the number of 1 m long for their length. The snake can dive within 30 m depth.

17. Turtle headed sea snake 

This snake can be found in the Oceania. Also known as egg eating sea snake this sea snake is feeds on fish eggs such as damselfish, blennies, and gobies. Turtle headed sea snake’s body can reach its length up to 103 cm long. An unique fact about this species of sea snake is that it doesn’t have palatal teeth.

18. Dwarf sea snake

Its size can reach the number of 74 cm in length. And it can dive in the depth of 25 m but it usually be found in the depth of 10 m because the snake loves shallow area. There are some species of the dwarf sea snake but four of them can be found in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. They can also be found in some areas throughout Indian and Pacific Ocean.

Only a little known about the plain sea snake. Plain sea snake has a scientific name of Hydrophis inornatus. The snake can dive in the depth of 50 m beneath the sea. And usually the plain sea snake is found in the coast along the Philippines.

20. Yellow Sea Snake

Last one for the types of sea snakes is yellow sea snake. Yellow sea snake can be found in Indian Ocean and New Caledonia. Their body can grow and reach its length up to 2.75 m long. This venomous sea snake has a yellow color for their body just like their name.
