Types of Sea Conditions and How to Monitor Them

by Widiya

The sea is one form of the Earth’s surface in the form of water. In Indonesia, the sea is the largest part even compared to terrestrial ecosystems. The sea plays an important role for the world because, in reality, it is not only in Indonesia where the sea area is bigger than the land but on this Earth, the land is only 1/3 while the waters are 2/3 parts. Because the sea is very important and influential for the world, we need to understand the state of the sea. On this occasion, we will discuss the state of the sea.

The state of the sea is a very important thing and must be known especially for the world of shipping. In Oceanography, (i.e. the study of the sea), the condition of the sea is a general condition of the free surface in large water areas that are affected by wind and water currents at certain locations and times.

This sea state includes various things such as ocean waves, current strength, wavelengths, and even the power of the wind itself. This sea state is characterized statistically, including the current, period and strength spectrum.

Sea waves are also known as waves. When we go to the high seas, we will feel that the surface of the water in the sea is not calm, but always changes. This constantly changing sea level is called waves. The waves vary in size depending on the situation. Sometimes the waves will feel big and sometimes calm. Waves that are too large will certainly be dangerous. The size of this wave depends on several factors and one of them is wind and weather.

In the oceans, we will find types of wind, including land winds and sea winds. Land winds are winds that blow from land to sea. This wind blows at night usually. While sea winds are winds that blow from sea to land, and usually blow in the morning. Then at that moment, the power of the wind is greater than when it is outside these moments.

Are Sea Circles Changing?

We need to know that the state of the sea is very much influenced by the power of the wind. This indicates that the condition of the sea can change over time according to the strength of the wind in the sea. If the condition of the wind is strong, the sea waves that are created are also large even up to several meters and can reach the coastal ecosystem. When the wind is not strong, the ocean waves are not too big.

Can Sea Circumstances be Monitored?

Regarding the state of the sea which can change at any time, does this need to be observed? The answer is, of course, yes. This is very necessary and very important especially for the world of shipping considering that the main field is the sea itself. Then, who can observe the state of the sea? The state of the sea can be observed by experienced people like trained marines. This sea state can be monitored through several tools such as weather monitors, wave radars, and satellites.
