Every country has a different geography and climate. All those things are influenced by various factors ranging from the location, the presence of oceans and land, and many more. One that is often discussed is a country that does not have sea or is commonly called landlocked countries. Chance is every continent must have more than two countries that do not have sea, and, thus, only consist of land.
Based on United Nations official data, there are 193 countries at liberty that have been recognized by the United Nations. About 22% or 45 countries are categorized as landlocked country. It is divided into several continents as follows: 16 countries located in the Continent of Africa, 12 countries in the Continent of Asia, 15 countries in the Continent of Europe, and 2 other countries located in the Continent of South America.
What piques people’s interest is that some countries do not have borders or do not even own the sea, but still manage to have a Navy to protect their country. So, are you curious which countries do not directly border the sea? Here is the list.

Do you know that there is a country on the border of the Continent of Asia and also the Continent of Europe that has entered the world’s largest landlocked country? Well, the aforementioned landlocked country is Kazakhstan with an area of 2,724,900 km2. Kazakhstan is a large country that has no sea at all and consequently, is covered by land. In addition, this country has been named the 9th largest country in the world. If you want to see the sea, you must cross one other country or two countries to the other side.
Countries that Do Not Have Double Sea
Countries that have no sea are divided into several types. If Kazakhstan becomes the largest country that has no sea, next is a country that has no double sea. The point is that the country that falls into this category becomes a country that must cross a minimum of two borders to reach the coast, in other words, the country residing around landlocked country also becomes the country with no sea.
There are two countries that fall into the category of countries with no double sea, namely Uzbekistan in Central Asia which borders Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, both of which do not have sea. It may be directly adjacent to the waters, but it is Lake Caspia, not the sea.
The next country is Liechtenstein in Central Europe. The country borders Austria and Hungary, which has the Adriatic coast until 1918. However, due to Liechtenstein’s lose at the end of World War II; Nazi Germany included Austria and Uzbekistan in the USSR.
Countries that Do Not Have Sea, and, thus Confined to One Land
The next category is a country that does not have sea and is directly confined to one land, whereas among all countries, there are three countries that are confined to one country. Country in such circumstance is called the enclave. Here are the following countries:
- Republic of San Marino, enclave in Italy
- Vatican City, enclave in Rome, Italy
- Lesotho Monarchy, enclave in South Africa
Countries that Do Not Have Sea and are Landlocked
The next country is a country that is almost locked by land because it does not have a long coastline and also enters the sea border. There are several countries that fall in this category, including:
- Iraq
- Slovenia
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Jordan
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
